Locharburn Pinot Gris 2011 & Pinot Noir 2010

06-Jul-2012
The 14 ha ‘Locharburn' vineyard of Chris and Jenny Hill is becoming defined in the wines that are being made from this site on terraces above Lowburn at Lake Dunstan, near Cromwell. The wines certainly show restraint when young, and take their time to open up. But on the way, they blossom and show the intricate detail and minerality that the more refined wines of Central Otago can show. These are the classical styles that serious wine enthusiasts deserve. Highly respected winemaker Carol Bunn, who has made the wines from the start has now scaled back her winemaking consultancy and relinquished the Locharburn winemaking, handing it over to the equally respected Jen Parr at the Terra Sancta facility at Bannockburn as of the 2012 vintage. We should see the continued realisation of the Locharburn site's potential. Here are my reviews of the newly released Pinot Gris 2011 and the yet-to-be-released Pinot Noir 2010. www.locharburnwines.co.nz
