Lone Hill Waitaki Valley Riesling Beerenauslese 2014

25-Feb-2015
The Lone Hill Vineyard is the winegrowing venture of Dunedin-based Peter and Teresa Wutz who planted their 4 ha vineyard on Grants Road in the Waitaki Valley to Pinot Gris in 2006 and Riesling in 2007. The initial 2011 and 2012 vintages were made at the Pasquale winery, with the wines from 2013 onwards made by Dean Shaw at the Central Otago Wine Co. The 2013 wines bore the ‘Dragon Bones’ label (click here to see my reviews), but the 2014s will probably revert to the ‘Lone Hill’ branding. In the 2014 growing season, the misty mornings and dry, sunny afternoons were ideal for the development of noble rot which allowed for the making of a beerenauslese style of Riesling. In tasting the wine, the Wutz family found their glasses needed refilling quickly, and this inspired them to bottle the wine in 750 ml format. I review the wine here. www.lonehill.co.nz
