Lowburn Ferry 2014 Central Otago Pinot Noir

05-Oct-2015
Roger and Jean Gibson produce some of Central Otago’s best Pinot Noirs under their Lowburn Ferry label. Their 3.5 ha vineyard is sited on a north-facing terrace overlooking the Lowburn Ferry crossing point on the west side of Lake Dunstan. Clones 5, 115, 667 and 777 in equal proportions and a smaller block of Abel clone fruit, planted on a variety of rootstocks on schist-based soil noteworthy for its excellent biological activity. The Gibsons tend to the viticulture and the wine is made by Peter Bartle at VinPro, and bottled under three tiers, the premium wine being the ‘Home Block’, a secondary label ‘Skeleton Creek; and a reserve-styled ‘The Ferryman’ this released only in exceptional years. I was particularly impressed with the 2013 ‘Skeleton Creek’ and ‘Home Block’ releases (click here to see my reviews), and now the Gibsons have three wines for their 2014 vintage release. The vintage is seen as a very favourable one with good fruit set followed by an initially cool summer with improving growing conditions to provide even ripening.
