Macvine International’s International Selection

10-May-2011

Michael Jemison is a wine lover extraordinaire. With a love of fine wine that stretches back as far as anyone can remember, Michael has a reputation for enjoying first-class wines and liquors, such that he set up Macvine International as a wine distribution company to immerse himself fully in the culture and the business of dealing with them. True to Michael's style, his portfolio is of high quality wines that are eclectic, if not esoteric. Among the wide range of wines and brands he distributes in New Zealand, the following show the diversity he has, at the affordable and accessible end. The wines come from:

Alsace, France – Gustave Lorentz
A family concern established in 1836, based in Bergheim, growing the full range of varietals, with holdings in the grand crus of Altenburg and Kanzlerberg. The company is managed by Georges Lorentz. www.gustavelorentz.com

Rhone, France – Ferraton Pere & Fils
Based at Tain, near Hermitagr, Ferraton was established in 1946 by Jean Ferraton and his father-in-law Jean Reverdy. With Michel Chapoutier as part-owner since 1998, the company has seen the quality of the wines step up. Biodynamic wine growing regimes are employed. www.ferraton.fr

Vin de Pays d'Oc, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
This is the largest of the six regional Vin de Pays of France. The rules for Vin de Pays has allowed the use and labelling of varietal wines with a modern take to facilitate exports. Macvine has wines made by Kiwi flying winemaker Matt Thomson, best known for his work for Saint Clair.

Mosel, Germany – Weingut Heribert Kerpen
Martin and Celia Kerpen are the eighth generation of this family growing wine. Based at Bernkastel-Wehlen on the Mosel, the estate has 6 ha of vines in the best sites in Wehlen, Graach and Bernkastel, planted wholly to Riesling. The special selection bottlings are marked with stars, ranging from * to *** www.weingut-kerpen.de

Piedmonte, Italy – Ca' Del Matt
Wines made by New Zealand winemaker Matt Thomson, who has seven Italian vintages experience. ‘Ca' Del Matt' means "madhouse” in local Piedmontese dialect.

Verona, Italy – Alpha Zeta
A range of modern, fruity wines from the Veronese hills. Made by Kiwi flying winemaker Matt Thomson, using fruit from contracted growers rather than purchased bulk wine.

Mendoza, Argentina – Auka
Auka is one of the brands of Bodega Vinedos San Polo, based at La Consulta in the Uco Valley. San Polo has 150 ha of vines planted to Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay and Torrontes. The Auka were the first Indians who lived in the southern San Carlos region of Mendoza. www.sanpolo.com.ar
