Mahurangi River Winery – Wines from Warkworth

06-Dec-2012
Mahurangi River Winery is the operation of Shelley Trotter and Gary Heaven, who acquired the business in December 2008. Shelley is a local farmer with a strong connection to the land, and Gary the ‘Cellar Rat' and between them, they have the passion to run the vineyard, winery and restaurant that is a feature in the Warkworth – Matakana vignoble. The property is just over 20 ha in size with around 6 ha of vines planted in 1998, which are north-facing in hard red clay soils and grown without irrigation. The varieties planted are Chardonnay, Syrah and the Bordeaux grapes of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Mahurangi River labelled wines are made only from estate grown fruit. Sam Whitmore was the initial winemaker for Shelly and Gary, with Warren Knudsen taking over that role for the 2012 vintage, and he now has viticultural responsibility, living on site. The very experienced winemaker Ben Dugdale has advised from the start and continues to do so. The wines reflect the Matakana soils with their savoury, earthy flavours, and the 2010 vintage of full ripeness is very apparent in the size of the wines. www.mahurangiriver.co.nz
