Margrain 2011 Pinot Gris and 2010 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

12-Aug-2013
Established in 1992, The Margrain Vineyard of Graham and Daryl Margrain has quietly grown from its original 4 ha on the Martinborough Terraces with the acquisition of the neighbouring Chifney vineyards and the planting of a block on Dry River Road south of the township. The very thoughtful winemaker Strat Canning has been there from 1996, the second vintage, and makes refined, textural wines that have longevity and the ability to work extremely well with food, rather than fruit-driven, up-front, simplistic styles. While all of the varieties he handles are made into classical and traditional expressions that are appreciated particularly by his peers and knowledgeable wine consumers, Strat has a particular deft hand with botrytis-affected wines, an indication of the skill he has and attention he pays to the winemaking. Here I review the 2011 Pinot Gris and 2010 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. www.margrainvineyard.co.nz
