Matariki 2010 Syrah, Reserve Merlot/Cabernet and Quintology

03-Aug-2015
The Matariki brand has been revitalised by owner John O’Connor who has established a new trading company, the Taurus Wine Group. John managed to retain stocks of wines he previously made, and has since repurchased wines from the previous business, thus maintaining a continuity of style. The advantage for the consumer is that the wines show a little bottle-age, which is an advantage in times when wines can be released too early for best drinking. Moving forward, John intends to source fruit from selected Hawke’s Bay vineyards (Gimblett Gravels is the favoured sub-region), and will oversee the making of the wines at a contract winemaking facility. In the meantime, John is now releasing his 2010 vintage wines. I review the Syrah, ‘Reserve’ Merlot/Cabernet and icon ‘Quintology’ wine. www.matarikiwines.co.nz
