Matawhero – Rebuilding the Mystique

29-Nov-2011
Since purchasing and recommencing Gisborne's famous Matawhero brand and 15 ha estate of Denis Irwin in 2008, Kirsten and Richard Searle of Brunton Road winery have revitalised the wines, working at recreating something of the mystique and style that Matawhero had in the early years, but also bringing in a fresh perspective to anticipate the sophistication of today's market. The wines are made at the Gisvin contract facility with viticultural specialist Jeremy Hyland overseeing the vineyards. Here are two new releases, both from 2011, a Pinot Gris from new clones and a ‘small and unique parcel' ‘Church House' tier Chardonnay Musque. www.matawhero.co.nz
