Matua Valley Single Vineyard Series Wines

09-Sep-2011

Matua Valley is one of this country's seminal wine producers, founded by Ross and Bill Spence as a small family-run tin-shed winery in West Auckland in 1974. Their modern and innovative approach with emerging classical varietals can be seen as the base of the diversity of successful wine styles in New Zealand today. In particular, the Spence brothers and Matua Valley are recognised as being the first to plant Sauvignon Blanc in the country. Such was the success and growth of the company that it became part of the Fosters group leading to being integral within world giant Beringer Blass, and is now part of the global Treasury Wine Estates group. The new release of nine ‘Single Vineyard Series' wines gives the impression of going back to grass roots and hand-crafted, limited production wines, but it also is a signal of trend-setting philosophies of identifying and expressing vineyard sites and terroir. The wines come from sites identified by the viticultural team led by Richard Shenfield as producing high quality, regionally distinctive and individual expressive fruit. The wines are given the greatest care in vinification by winemaker Nikolai St George and are elegant in expression rather than statement wines. www.matua.co.nz
