Middle-Earth Wines from Nelson, Middle of New Zealand

18-Apr-2013

Middle Earth is the brand of Winelord, a company based on 50 ha of vines on the Brightwater land of Rob Grey’s family in Nelson who have owned it for more than 50 years. The vineyard with plants up to 15 y.o. is planted to 70% Sauvignon Blanc with approx. 10% each of Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. There is around 0.4 ha of Pinot Meunier which is 4 y.o.. Grey is in partnership with his daughter and son-in-law Ryan O’Connell, and also produce wine under the ‘Greys Fine Wines’, ‘Brightwater Gravels’ and ‘Why Not Wines’ labels. The ‘Middle-Earth’ range refers partly to New Zealand and its scenery which has been captured in the Peter Jackson films of Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ books. Nelson is of course geographically in the middle of the country. The family tend the vineyard and the wines are made by Trudy Sheild at Waimea Estates. Here is my review of the Sauvignon Blanc 2012 www.middleearthwine.com
