Mills Reef 2013 Reserve Hawke’s Bay Sauvignon, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay

03-Jul-2014
Mills Reef’s winemakers Tim Preston and Paul Dawick regard their ‘Reserve’ range of wines as ‘premium’, as they are made from low-yielding vines in sites proven to provide fruit with intensity and pure varietal character. Tim and Paul strive to achieve balance of flavour, structure and texture in these wines, allowing the super-premium ‘Elspeth’ range to have the more individual expressions. The ‘Reserve’ wines have achieved noteworthy success in the market place and on the show circuit, endorsing their approach. Here, I review three ‘Reserve’ tier whites from the 2013 Hawke’s Bay vintage, deemed to be an outstanding one where the whites show great ripeness, while retaining excellent acidity. The Mills Reef expressions have soft, stylish textures and subtly building flavours. www.millsreef.co.nz
