Mills Reef ‘Elspeth’ ‘Trust Vineyard’ Syrah 2013

18-Jun-2015
The Mills Reef flagship ‘Elspeth’ wines are limited edition bottlings, made only when the fruit is exceptional, and offer unique characters preserved by no-expense spare winemaking. The wines from the 4 ha ‘Trust’ vineyard situated at the corner of S.H. 50 and Mere Road are often bottled separately under the ‘Elspeth’ tier due to their particular individual character. Only Syrah (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) are planted, at a close density of 6,300 plants per ha, this being 2-3 times that normally seen in Hawke’s Bay. The low trellising and cordon are designed to allow the fruit benefit from the heat radiated by the stony soils. Though one of Mills Reef’s younger vineyards, the wines have amassed an impressive tally of gold medals. Here, I review the 2013 ‘Elspeth’ ‘Trust’ Syrah which is a little more ‘out there’ compared to the 2013 ‘Elspeth’ Syrah I tasted last month (click here to see my review). www.millsreef.co.nz
