Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2011

22-Mar-2013

The ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay from Mills Reef has always been unashamedly a rich, creamy style with excellent consumer appeal. Despite the trend towards refinement and elegance that often leads to wines that are lean, hard and mean, Mills Reef have understood the market they have captured and continued to satisfy it. This is not to say the wines are broad, flabby and dull, but they have richness and rounded mouthfeel and usually sufficient oaking to let the drinker know there is a barrel component in it. However, I sense the wines showing a little more smoothness and harmony and possibly a little more finesse. Is it an expression of the cooler vintages of late, or progression of the style by Mills Reef winemakers Tim Preston and Paul Dawick? Here is my review of the 2011 Mills Reef ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay. www.millsreef.co.nz
