Mills Reef Reserve Pinot Gris 2012 and Merlot 2011, and Elspeth Cabernet Merlot 2009

21-Feb-2013

It is accepted that the various sub-regions in Hawkes Bay offer advantages for different grape varieties. Many producers have access to fruit from various areas to obtain the most suitable fruit for different wine varieties and styles. Mills Reef has five specific vineyards for that purpose. The ‘Mere Road', ‘Trust' and ‘Plateau' sites in the Gimblett Gravels are particularly suited to the Bordeaux varietals and Syrah, the latter vineyard also having Viognier. The ‘Sandy Road' vineyard has sandy soil and is influenced by coastal breezes and is the source for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and the ‘Powdrell' vineyard, also in Meeanee is the source for Sauvignon Blanc. Fruit is also sourced under contract for other varieties. Here I review a ‘Reserve' white and red, and a cellar-aged ‘Elspeth' red which has moved up a gear, the white from the Maraekakaho district and the two reds from the Gimblett Gravels. www.millsreef.co.nz
