Millton ‘Riverpoint’ Gewurztraminer 2010

12-Jul-2012

Gisborne is the original home to the best Gewurztraminer wines in New Zealand. The wines from this region possess greater weight and structure with riper, spicier, ginger-like characters that set them apart from the more floral examples from further south. Denis Irwin brought fame to Gewurztraminer, Gisborne and New Zealand in the late 1970s when his Matawhero wine was selected for Buckingham Palace, and Gisborne has never looked back, with some superb wines under the Nobilo, Revington, Montana, and many other labels, and now Vinoptima by Nick Nobilo. Such was the quality of Denis Irwin's wines that cuttings went to Alan Limmer, Neil McCallum and Hatsch Kalberer, who have all done justice to the variety. Gisborne doyen James Millton has happily kept in the background with Gewurztraminer, heeding the advice: "Don't stand on the shoulders of giants”, but now has come the time to step into the limelight. James sourced from around the country, old plant material that made legendary Gewurztraminers of the past and re-established vines in the famed ‘Riverpoint Road' district, arguably the best location for growing Gewurztraminer in New Zealand.
