Moana Park 2013 Single Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay, Merlot Cab and Syrah

31-Mar-2015
Dan Barker and Kaylea Barker work hard at making their contemporary Moana Park Hawke’s Bay wines interesting, exciting and innovative. They base their winegrowing on a philosophy of minimal intervention to make wine as naturally as possible, employing sustainable and organic practices, the fruit from 8 vineyards, these being the ‘Home’ block sited at Puketapu where the cellar door is located, two in the Gimblett Gravels, one coastal-influenced and also Dartmoor, and three in the Esk Valley district. The ‘Estate Series’ wines are the core, supported by the value, accessible ‘Crush Pad’ brand. The site, soil and terroir expressive wines are in the ‘Single Vineyard Reserve’ tier, this formerly labelled ‘Vineyard Tribute’. In 2013, the Barkers introduced ‘The Vintage Project’ for a unique and limited edition wine from each vintage. This is a serious wine venture with serious aims. Here, I review three ‘Single Vineyard Reserve’ wines, a Chardonnay, a Merlot/Cabernet blend and a Syrah, all from the ‘Gimblett Road’ vineyard, all from the outstanding 2013 vintage. www.moanapark.co.nz
