Mudbrick 2014 Reserve Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Merlot/Cabernet

18-Jun-2015
Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant is one of Waiheke Island’s most popular wine destinations. Owners Nick and Robyn Jones established the vineyard, developed the property with gardens and a restaurant over the course of two decades. Now owning two vineyards on the Island, the home ‘Mudbrick’ and ‘Shepherds Point’ sites, additional fruit is sourced from contracted vineyards to provide around 36 tonnes every year resulting in up to approx. 2,000 cases of Waiheke Island wine. Over this wine is brought in from other regions to double the amount available. Patrick Newton is the winemaker, and his bottlings grow in stature every year as he comes to understand the fruit and the vineyards. I’ve rated his ‘Reserve’ releases highly. Here, I review an ‘Onetangi Valley’ Syrah 2014, and a selection of 2014 ‘Reserve’ whites and reds, among which is a Central Otago Pinot Noir! www.mudbrick.co.nz
