Nautilus, Opawa and Twin Islands First 2014 Releases

19-Dec-2014
Nautilus Estate is one of the most highly respected wine producers in Marlborough, making stylish, elegant modern wines. Established in 1985, Nautilus Estate celebrated three decades of winegrowing with the 2014 vintage. The company, owned by Robert Hill Smith of Yalumba fame does everything with care and attention to detail, sourcing fruit from 6 estate vineyards with some contract supply. The standard bearer varieties of the region, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have a strong following both domestically and internationally reflecting the classical interpretation of style by winemaker and general manager Clive Jones, his assistant Brett Bermingham and viticulturist Mike Collins. There’s a quiet air of innovation at Nautilus Estate as new styles and varieties are being trialled. Here, I review the first of the 2014 white wine releases, Sauvignon Blanc under the ‘Twin Islands’, ‘Opawa’ and ‘Nautilus Estate’ labels, and Pinot Gris, Gruner Veltliner and Albarino, the latter being the first bottling of this variety. www.twinislandswine.com  www.opawawine.com  www.nautilusestate.com
