Neudorf’s Sensational 2009 Pinot Noirs

18-Apr-2011
Neudorf reckon 2009 is an exceptional year for their Pinot Noir. While Chardonnay is the proven flagship for Neudorf, most wine commentators would agree that their Pinot Noir can now claim equal status. It's just that the Chardonnay has a longer pedigree! Without any doubt, the Neudorf ‘Moutere' Pinot Noir is the leading example from the Nelson region and ranks alongside the best in the country, such as Ata Rangi, Fromm ‘Clayvin', Pegasus Bay ‘Prima Donna' and Felton Road ‘Block 5'. It is a small production wine, around 500 cases in 2009. For those who can get their hands on the rarer ‘Moutere – Home Vineyard' wine, the production of 100 cases for this vintage, they are in for a greater treat. Some would argue that one is better than the other, but it is really a matter of the ‘Moutere' being a blend for complementary completeness, and the ‘Home Vineyard' a site expressive wine. The fun is the comparison of the two, over time. The cheeky Burgundy analogy for me would be the ‘Moutere' having the power of Richebourg, and the ‘Home Vineyard' possessing the opulence of La Tache. Here are my reviews of the two at this youthful stage. www.neudorf.co.nz
