Ngatarawa ‘Proprietors Reserve’ 2013 and 2014 Releases

15-May-2015
Alwyn Corban of the famous pioneering Auckland winemaking family and Garry Glazebrook whose family has a well-established Hawke’s Bay farming history set up Ngatarawa Wines in 1981. The company is a success story of growth, respect and independence, and is now owned by Alwyn and his cousin Brian, Ngatarawa, following their purchase of the Glazebrook shareholding in 1999. Ngatarawa makes fine Hawke’s Bay wine based on fruit from the Bridge Pa Triangle district that is available to all segments of the market, the ‘Stables’ range the most widely seen around the country. Other tiers and brands include ‘Silks’, ‘Glazebrook’ and the super-premium ‘Alwyn’ range which is made and released only in the very best years. Ngatarawa have now released a new range of premium wines, the ‘Proprietors Reserve’ bottlings which fit in between the ‘Alwyn’ and ‘Glazebrook’ tiers. Their presentation and livery suggests the wines have more in common with the ‘Alwyn’ bottlings. Already the wines have been successful on the show circuit with gold medal awards for the Chardonnay and Noble Riesling. The Merlot/Cabernet and Syrah come from the highly touted 2013 vintage. They are fulsome crowd-pleasers. Here are my reviews of the wines. www.ngatarawa.co.nz
