Ohau Gravels 2012 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris

26-Aug-2013
I’ve been following the fortunes of the Ohau Gravels wines from the Kapiti Coast with great interest since the inaugural 2009 vintage. The Pinot Gris of that year took a champion trophy and the Sauvignon Blanc a silver medal signalling the potential of the site which is said to have soils of Marlborough with the climate of Nelson. Viticulturist Kate Gibbs and winemaker Jane Cooper are showing a greater understanding and belief in the fruit and the wines are growing steadily in their quality and style with clear differentiation into second tier ‘Woven Stone’ and limited release ‘Single Vineyard’ expressions. Here I review the 2012 releases of the premium ‘Ohau Gravels’ Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. www.ohaugravels.co.nz
