OMEO Central Otago Riesling and Pinot Noirs

15-Jul-2014
Bruce Shaw owns the tiny 1 ha Omeo Vineyard situated in the foothills of the Earnscleugh Valley, near Alexandra. Named after the local area, gully and creek, the Omeo vineyard was established in 1998, 90% to 6 clones of close-planted Pinot Noir and 10% to Riesling. Bruce worked with the late Mike Wolter and completed wine studies through EIT Hawke’s Bay in the 1990s. Bruce sold the fruit from his Omeo vineyard up until 2008, and from 2009 decided to make his own wine, with two friends in Bannockburn. Bruce took up the position of assistant winemaker to Antony Worch at Alexandra Vintners in 2012, and from then the wines have been made there. The production is very limited, with approx. 200 cases of Pinot Noir and 45 cases of Riesling produced annually. For availability, contact Bruce at email: omeovineyard@xtra.co.nz
