One Off Hawke’s Bay Malbec 2014

23-Sep-2015
The ‘One off’ label of Rod McDonald Wines is arguably the most interesting for wine enthusiasts, with what is seemingly an endless run of individual and unusual limited release bottlings of distinctive wines. The wines don’t conform to the regularly expressed, philosophically established and stylistically maintained tiers that Rod has in his portfolio, and the ‘One Off’ wines are not repeated annually, making them even more fascinating. Rod is happy to look outside the home region of Hawke’s Bay, utilising fruit from other districts, and the winemaking can be adventurous. Here, I review a Hawke’s Bay Malbec, his first ever bottling of the variety. Of the two clones in New Zealand, this is the thick skinned Bordeaux clone used. www.rmwines.co.nz
