Osawa Wines Winemaker’s Collection

23-Nov-2012
At the start of November I reviewed a number of ‘Flying Sheep' and Osawa ‘Prestige Collection' wines which showed very well, very much in accordance with the results the wines have been obtaining recently. The Osawa vineyard is on Kereru Road in the Maraekakaho district near Hastings, and being higher and further inland than most of the Hawke's Bay vineyards, it is particularly well-suited to the aromatic varieties, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The best performing blocks producing fruit with the most unique character have been identified over successive vintages, and these are cultivated to make wine that reflects the vineyard. The top tier wines are labelled ‘Winemaker's Collection' and reflect the input of Taizo Osawa's winemaker Rod McDonald in the philosophy behind these wines. The production is very limited and not every variety is made every year. Here, I review the latest ‘Winemaker's Collection' wines, yet to be released. www.osawawines.co.nz
