Palliser Estate and Pencarrow 2013 Chardonnay

07-Mar-2014
Although the complete range of Palliser Estate and second tier Pencarrow wines are exemplary and among the best produced in Martinborough, the Chardonnays are noteworthy for their consistent quality and consumer appeal. They tread the fine line between providing sufficiently sweet and rich fruit that wine consumers crave, and possessing enough savoury complexities and inputs to capture the interest of wine judges on the show circuit. Winemaker Allan Johnson and his team have done this successfully for many years. The Pencarrow wine is a little more fruit-driven, whereas the Palliser Estate is more refined and with its layers of flavour and balance. Both are excellent. Here, I review the new 2013 releases, both showing considerable elegance and finesse, the result of an excellent vintage and a direction towards greater stylishness. www.palliser.co.nz
