Pegasus Bay 2011 Riesling and Pinot Noir, and 2012 Aria

01-May-2014
Ivan and Chris Donaldson planted a broad range of grape varieties when establishing Pegasus Bay in the Waipara Valley, much of the choices based on small-scale research conducted by them and other Canterbury pioneers in the 1970s. While the Donaldsons have made a success of pretty much everything, the two standout varieties are Riesling and Pinot Noir, these being now deemed the most suited to the district, and borne out by the successful releases by so many producers following them. Pegasus Bay’s Rieslings remain the benchmark for the Waipara Valley, whether their ‘regular’ release, the dry ‘Bel Canto’ or ‘Aria’ Late Picked, and the Pegasus Bay Pinot Noirs are rated among the best in the country. Here, I review the new release 2011 Riesling and Pinot Noir, plus the 2012 ‘Aria’ Late Picked Riesling. www.pegasusbay.com
