Pegasus Bay 2012 Gewurztraminer, 2011 Merlot Cabernet and Prima Donna

24-Oct-2014
Pegasus Bay was awarded my ‘Winery of the Year’ in 2013 due partly to the breadth as well as depth of quality of the wine portfolio. When Ivan and Chris Donaldson established their vineyards, they, like most pioneers, planted a fruit salad of varieties trialling what could be successful. Unlike most who do so, they’ve not shed the majority of them to concentrate on the best one or two varieties, but developed what they had as best they could. Perseverance, and innovative and lateral thinking has seen Pegasus Bay go places with grapes that others would have discarded, and in doing so, they’ve created the benchmarks for many of the wine styles that prevail in the Waipara Valley. Here, I review three diverse Pegasus Bay wines, all archetypes for the district. www.pegasusbay.com
