Pegasus Bay 2012 Pinot Noir. 2013 Aria and 2011 Encore

10-Mar-2015
The Pegasus Bay wines exhibit the best of the Waipara Valley region through mature vines and the experience in knowing how to work with the fruit to capture the character of growing season and vineyard sites. Pinot Noir and Riesling are particularly transparent varieties, in all their guises, and the Pegasus Bay expressions are consistently outstanding. Here, I review the 2012 Pinot Noir, from a cooler growing season that has already yielded a number of superlative examples from neighbouring vignerons and from nearby vineyards. I also review two of the sweeter flagship Rieslings, from the 2013 and 2011 vintages, the Late Picked ‘Aria’ and Noble ‘Encore’ respectively. The growing seasons were warmer for the district, but also seen as providing top-flight wines. I had a preview of the ‘Aria’ 2013 at the mail order tasting held in Wellington at the start of December last year (click here to see my report), and the wine has increased in aromatic interest and richness. www.pegasusbay.com
