Pegasus Bay – Master of All Trades

10-Aug-2012

The saying ‘Jack of All Trades, Master of None' is a truism, and in wine it is the specialists who are the best at crafting wines of a particular style, rather than the wineries with a large and broad portfolio. There are, however, rarities, a few makers are truly adept at many styles, if not all they produce. Such generalists who excel at everything they do can be considered among the best winemakers in the country. Pegasus Bay in the Waipara Valley is one such winery. Their three latest white wine releases hark back to different regions in the Old World, each quite separate in parameters of style, yet winemakers Matt Donaldson and Lynette Hudson continually make outstanding examples of them, expressions from the Waipara Valley to be sure, but sufficiently good to stand tall with the best examples of the original models. Here, their Sauvignon/Semillon can be compared to dry white Bordeaux, the Chardonnay to white burgundy, and the ‘Aria' Late Picked Riesling to a Rheinpfalz Auslese. www.pegasusbay.com
