Peter Yealands – Everyman’s Wine

18-Feb-2013

Peter Yealands has already made his mark with his entrepreneurial approach to the farming and marine industries, but his wine involvement has propelled him onto centre stage over recent years. His own Yealands Estate has made a most significant impact on the New Zealand wine scene, adding considerable depth to the Awatere Valley with the establishment of an-ultra modern winery and 850 ha of vineyards centred around Seaview Road in 2008. His merger with Ager Sectus in 2011 furthered the expansion of the Yealands operation to provide a strong foothold in the North Island. Yet despite all this growth and size, Peter Yealands has the reputation of being a bloke that can relate to anyone. He's noted to be hands-on and practical as well as being a visionary. The key to his success is his connection with the ‘common' man. This can be seen in the wines released under the Yealands umbrella. There are different rangers and tiers, from the approachable ‘Peter Yealands' wines, to the specialist ‘Single Block' wines. All are well-priced, and within everyman's reach. Here are my reviews of many of the current Yealands releases. They show an elegance of style reflecting the influence Awatere Valley, and a particular strength with the Sauvignon Blanc variety. www.yealands.co.nz
