Prophet’s Rock and Rocky Point New Central Otago Releases

28-Mar-2014
Established in 1999 by Mike and Angela Mulvey, Prophet’s Rock was purchased in April 2013 by a consortium of New Zealand investors with vineyard interests near the Prophet’s Rock vineyard on Chinaman’s Terrace in Bendigo. The purchase has enabled the expansion of the operation from Bendigo fruit only, to replace the company’s plantings in the Pisa district, that were sold separately by the Mulveys. Winemaker Paul Pujol, with the company since 2005, has assumed the extra responsibilities of viticulturist and general manager. Paul, with extensive experience in Alsace, Burgundy and Oregon, has made a series of wines which reflect his approach as learnt overseas, with the fruit characteristics of Central Otago, making the Prophet’s Rock wines very individual in style. It looks exciting times for the company as it heads into the 2014 vintage under the new management and ownership. Here, I review the new releases of the more accessible ‘Rocky Point’ tier as well as the premium ‘Prophet’s Rock’ range. www.prophetsrock.co.nz
