Quarter Acre Wines from Rod McDonald

08-Feb-2013
Ever since 2006 when Rod McDonald was awarded ‘Winemaker of the Year', leaving Vidal Estate, he has been building his brand ‘Rod McDonald Wines' and the infrastructure behind it. On the way, he has secured a good many contract winemaking jobs for some high profile wine labels, and in doing so has built relationships for grape sources, winemaking facilities and distribution channels. Several of his personal limited production and limited release wines, such as ‘No. 8', ‘One Off' and ‘Blanket Hills' have made their way onto the marketplace. Rod's involvement with Te Awanga Estate is now being promoted, his name and logo integral with the labels (click here to see my reviews of the 2011 Te Awanga Estate wines). However, it is his ‘Quarter Acre' wines the represents his dreams. Just as the ¼ acre section is the fabled dream for the normal Kiwi, the ‘Quarter Acre' wines are the expression of what Rod wants to see in the wines of his home in Hawke's Bay. I review the new release 2011 vintage wines, bearing the new labelling, and no doubt the realisation of Rod McDonald's vision. They are wines that require thoughtful sipping, but deliver much. www.rmwines.co.nz
