Red Deer Marlborough Sounds 2013 Releases

21-Nov-2013
The Red Deer wines of Waitaria Estate come from 5 ha of vineyard in Keneperu Sound in the Marlborough Sounds, an area deemed too windy and wet for viticulture. The vines were originally planted in 2004 as part of the Bayview Farms property which was acquired by Chicago businessman Stan Simpson in 2010. Willoughby and Laurie Roodt manage the vineyard and farm with advice from Bart Arnst. Winemaking is to the care of Dave Clouston, so there is now plenty of expertise to see the development of this brand. At the start of this year, I reviewed a selection of 2011 and 2010 wines (click here to see). Here, I review three 2013 vintage releases and have a re-look at the 2010 Chardonnay. The 2013s show a step up in fruit depth and the 2010 Chardonnay has developed greater flavour and richness. www.reddeerwine.com
