Red Deer Marlborough Sounds Chardonnay 2013

21-May-2014
The ‘Red Deer’ brand is the wine from Waitaria Bay Estate, quite possibly the only commercial grapegrowing operation in the Marlborough Sounds. The 5 ha of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Viognier vines, established in 2004, are owned by Chicago businessman Stan Simpson, who has Willoughby and Laurie Roodt as managers on site. Bart Arnst tends to the viticulture, working towards organic certification and the wine maker is Dave Clouston. The signs are there for some interesting if not exciting wine to emerge. I’ve seen wines from the 2010 vintage onwards, and as time has progressed, so have the wines. Here, I review the 2013 Chardonnay. www.reddeerwine.com
