Saint Clair 2014 ‘Pioneer Block 14’ Pinot Noir and 2013 ‘Pioneer Block 17’ Merlot

10-Jul-2015
The Ibbotson family are gradually and carefully expanding their fruit resource to be able to offer an ever-increasing array of individual and high quality range of wines. The burgeoning ‘Pioneer Block’ range is indicative of their efforts, and the wines have never been better or more interesting. The ‘Pioneer Block 14 – Doctor’s Creek’, situated south-west of the town of Blenheim in the Omaka sub-region, is owned by the Ibbotson family and has produced ‘Pioneer Block’ Pinot Noir wine since 2007, and they have recently expanded this vineyard with Dijon clones onto adjoining clay soils. And in December 2013, the family took ownership of a single vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels, now named ‘Pioneer Block 17 – Plateau’ with free-draining deep gravel soils. The 10.4 ha vineyard, off Omahu Road, Twyford, has Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier, the vines between 10-15 y.o. Here, I review the latest releases from these two ‘Pioneer Block’ vineyards. www.saintclair.co.nz
