Saint Clair works for Red Success

20-May-2011
Saint Clair has won numerous top awards for all of the varieties of wine it makes, but with reds, the same success as with Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay is more difficult to achieve. This applies to practically all of Marlborough's producers, but Saint Clair seems to be ahead of most. Pinot Noir is now on a roll, with the 2010 Marlborough and 2009 ‘Block 15 – Strip Block' winning gold medals recently in domestic wine shows. Most growers have given up on Merlot in Marlborough, ripeness being the problem, but Saint Clair has persevered. While Saint Clair's ‘Reserve' Merlot label has won top awards, it is remarkable how at the affordable level, the variety is transformed into respectability. Here are two Saint Clair reds which show encouraging ‘work in progress'. www.saintclair.co.nz
