Sherwood Estate – A Significant Waipara Winegrower

12-Jun-2013
Established in 1987, Sherwood Estate has grown to become one of the most significant winegrowers in Waipara. Dayne and Jill Sherwood, the founders, continue to lead the business in its day-to-day operation. The estate owns over 80 ha of vineyards, five in the Waipara Valley and three in Marlborough, and their winery, situated in Waipara is run by the very experienced Petter Evans. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling are the key varietals, and the Sherwoods having a particular passion for Pinot Noir which they championed from the very start. Around 98% of the production is exported to 25 countries, making the company one of the top 20 wine exporters. The Sherwood Estate Signature Family range is the core of the output and represents the philosophy of the key varietals from the Waipara and Marlborough vineyards. The ‘Stratum’ range is focussed on varietal expression, and the ‘Heritage Collection’ wines are the innovative or pioneering styles. I review a selection from these three ranges. www.sherwood.co.nz
