SOHO ‘Blue Blood Reserve’ ‘Zabeel’ Waiheke Island 2013

17-Jun-2015
The SOHO Wine Co. of Rachael Carter has a bourgeoning wine portfolio that encompasses Waiheke Island, Marlborough and Central Otago. Within these regions can be made wines under the accessible ‘White Collection’ and premium ‘Black’ label ranges, from different varieties into various styles. The modern and positive marketing approach by Rachael’s team have led to considerable penetration to the consumer at different levels. There has been one style of wine that SOHO was missing – a super-premium wine, and that has been filled with the creation of the ‘Blue Blood Collection’, a reserve style wine at the highest level. The inaugural wine is a Waiheke Island red named ‘Zabeel’, fittingly after a New Zealand and Australian sire, with 25 champion sire awards, inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame, and owned by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan, and a syndicate. The wine is based on Merlot, Syrah and Malbec, from the wonderful 2013 vintage, and has been made by James Rowan. According to James, there were parcels of fruit, batches and barrels of wine that stood out from the outset, and a blend proved them to make something special. I understand that there will be a 2014 ‘Zabeel’. Rachael would consider adding other styles to this flagship tier, maybe a Central Otago Pinot Noir? The ‘Blue Blood Collection’ would be made only in exceptional vintages. Here, I review the ‘Zabeel’ 2013. www.sohowineco.com
