Squawking Magpie Gimblett Gravels Chardonnay 2008

26-Aug-2011
It is said the Gimblett Gravels terroir instils an iron core to the wines from grapes grown there. The character is seen to be an especially positive trait in Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines in a warm, dry and favourable year. There is the opinion that it is less desirable in white varieties, and some growers and producers seek to moderate it by planting in cooler, less bony-soiled sections and picking earlier than later. With the 4 ha ‘Woodlands' vineyard planted in 1995 and a further 20 ha development planted in 2002, Gavin Yortt's Squawking Magpie wines are unashamedly Gimblett Gravels wines through and through, including his Chardonnay. www.squawkingmagpie.co.nz
