Squawking Magpie ‘The Chatterer’ 2012 Reds

03-May-2013

The Squawking Magpie wines of Gavin Yortt are fine examples demonstrating the consistency of style imbued on a broad range of wines by the terroir of the Gimblett Gravels district of Hawke’s Bay. Certainly all of the wines have a strength of ripeness, character and core of flavour where the word ‘iron’ seems appropriate. Such wines tend to have the ability to develop well over time, and often require some bottle aging to make them more accessible. Many producers have wines that are lighter, easier to approach, and thus more appealing in a commercial sense, and with Squawking Magpie, there is ‘The Chatterer’ range. Whilst the wines can be enjoyed earlier, they still retain the traits of the growing district. Here, I review two 2012 red releases under ‘The Chatterer’ tier. www.squawkingmagpie.co.nz
