Staete Landt and Map Maker Show the Land

25-Jul-2014
The Staete Landt estate was established when Ruud Maasdam and Dorien Vermaas purchased the land in the Rapaura district of Marlborough in 1997. The 21 ha of vines are set in what is called the ’Golden Mile’ and the vineyard is carefully managed to allow each parcel to be expressive of the soil variations within the site. This has enabled the production of the terroir-driven ‘Staete Landt’ wines and contemporary, fruit-expressive ‘Map Maker’ bottlings. To Ruud and Dorien, the quality level of both labels is equally high, due to the same amount of attention given to, and the level of health achieved by all the vines across the whole vineyard. Ruud personally manages all the viticulture and makes the wine at a nearby contract facility. The level of detail and intimacy in the viticulture and winemaking has resulted in excellent wines. Here, I review a selection of new releases. www.staetelandt.co.nz
