Stanley Estates 2014 Reserve Chardonnay and Lagrein

08-Jun-2015
Stanley Estates is the Awatere Valley winegrowing venture of Bridget Ennals and Steve Pellett. ‘Stanley’ is the affectionate name for a Land Rover in which they travelled for adventure. Bridget and Steve have approached wine with adventure, with three vineyards, their home site established in 2003, then purchased their ‘Little Oasis’ vineyard, already established in 2005, and developed a new ‘SECC’ block in 2006. Across the three sites, they have 12.5 ha of Sauvignon Blanc, 3 ha of Pinot Noir, 2.2 ha of Pinot Gris, 1.2 ha Albarino, 1 ha Lagrein and 0.3 ha Chardonnay. They have Jeremy Hyland overseeing the viticulture and Eveline Fraser as winemaker. The Albarino, first vintage in 2012 has been a success. Here, I review the first releases of the Stanley Estates Chardonnay and Lagrein, both from 2014, the latter variety grown in the Alto Adige, north Italy. Interesting and adventurous times continue for Bridget and Steve. www.stanleyestates.co.nz
