Te Awa ‘Left Field’ Hawke’s Bay Pinot Noir 2013

16-Jun-2014
Purchased by the Villa Maria group in September 2012, Te Awa has continued to shine with its own Hawke’s Bay identity. This differentiation from the Villa Maria, Vidals, Esk Valley and Thornbury labels gives the parent group greater market strength and coverage, is essential in retaining the interest of the fine wine lover who appreciates diversity. Since the purchase, Te Awa ‘Estate’ wines have enjoyed show success in their own right, and I understand the super-premium ‘Kidnapper Cliffs’ wines will be very special, though different in style to previous releases. Being part of the Villa Maria group has meant access to greater vineyard resources and increased input from a strong and experienced team. Te Awa winemaker Ant Mackenzie has had greater options to make the more accessible ‘Left Field’ wines as well, and here I review the new 2013 Pinot Noir, made from fruit from the renowned ‘Keltern’ vineyard, which in the past has gone into a Vidal label exported to the U.K. www.teawa.com
