The 3rd Man – Three New Releases

01-May-2013
The 3rd Man is a growers label founded in 2009 by Michael Darby in the Waipara region of North Canterbury. Michael has identified a number of "highly expressive vineyards and philosophically aligned growers” that he wishes to work with in producing sub-regionally expressive wines. He makes wines from selected small vineyard parcels of fruit based on vine age, the soil profiles and the region, keeping the cropping is low, and making the wines with the indigenous vineyard yeasts. At present, he sources grapes from three vineyards: ‘Darnley Corner’ on Glasnevin gravels, the ‘Lough’ vineyard on rich clay, and the ‘Omihi’ vineyard with rich limestone soil. A new vineyard will be added for 2013. Theo Coles of The Crater Rim is the contract winemaker. Michael’s aim is for balanced, elegant wines. I review three new releases. www.thethirdman.co.nz
