The Cypress Syrah 2009

10-Apr-2014
Cypress Wines is the ongoing wine venture of Gus and Melanie Lawson. The Lawson family have been involved in viticulture for over two decades, and are best known for their involvement in Te Awa Farm in the Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay. Moving on from Te Awa in 2002, Gus and Mel established Cypress Wines, based on a small, steep, 35° hillside vineyard with clay and limestone-influenced soils, on Roy’s Hill, overlooking the Gimblett Gravels, a project that the Lawson family had already been developing. Along with these plantings are vines on the flatter gravel-based soils. There are around 6 ha of vines in total, and the wines are made by Rod McDonald. The Cypress ‘white label’ wines feature Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah, made from the flatter site, and under the reserve-style ‘Cypress Terraces’ tier are Viognier, Chardonnay and Syrah, made from the hillside vines. The outstanding 2009 vintage enabled the making of an icon wine named ‘The Cypress’, which will be followed up by a 2013 and 2014. Here is my review of the inaugural 2009. www.cypresswines.co.nz
