The Ned 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and 2012 Pinot Noir

11-Sep-2013
The Ned is the principal brand of Marisco Vineyards, the venture of Brent Marris following his family’s selling of Wither Hills to Lion Nathan in 2002. The Marisco vineyards are situated on the 268 ha property on the banks of the Waihopi River. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir are the varieties planted for ‘The Ned’ which is named after the 909 metre peak to the south-east. The state-of-the-art and fully equipped 6,000 tonne ‘New Generation’ winery commissioned in 2009 handles the fruit, which is grown under the care of vineyard manager Anto Rasmussen. Matt Mitchell, formerly of Ager Sectus is the winemaker with Brent Marris. The wines produced to date have proven to be classical Marlborough expressions and there is every reason for Marisco and The Ned to become as successful as Wither Hills. Here, I review the new 2013 Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and 2012 Pinot Noir. www.marisco.co.nz
