The Writer’s Block Central Otago Pinot Gris 2013

04-Aug-2014
Brendan Seal’s ‘The Writer’s Block’ wines are very limited production Central Otago single vineyard expressions that explore different sites and winemaking techniques with Pinot Noir. However, Brendan is not averse to making parcels of other styles of wine from outstanding fruit if the opportunity presents itself, his delicious 2013 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer an example (click here to read my review). His ‘Packspur Wine Studio’ winery is sited at the McAulay’s vineyard at Lowburn, and Brendan managed to acquire a parcel of the Pinot Gris fruit from the nearby vines. Wanting to make "something positive” out of Pinot Gris, Brendan took the approach as employed by Andre Ostertag in Alsace by fermenting to dryness in neutral barrel with full solids and allowing complete malolactic conversion. He took the further steps of only adding SO2 just prior to bottling, and not filtering the wine, risky in small batch vinification, but resulting in greater flavour interest. The wine is indeed a very interesting one, with more than a nod to Alsace. Here is my review. www.thewritersblock.co.nz
