Thornbury – A Re-Look

31-Jul-2014
In March, earlier this year, I reviewed the current range of Thornbury wines, which Simon Fell is responsible for. The Thornbury brand was acquired by Villa Maria in 2006 and it has grown considerably since. Simon is in a unique position among the Villa Maria winemakers as the Thornbury bottlings come from different growing regions, employing key varieties in each district. This means that Simon travels to source fruit from Gisborne in the north to Central Otago in the south, much to the envy, I’d imagine, of his fellow winemakers on the Villa Maria team. He also looks at a wider range of styles as well. Here, I have a relook at the 2013 Gisborne Chardonnay and the 2012 Central Otago Pinot Noir, and review the new 2013 Hawke’s Bay Merlot. www.thornbury.co.nz
