Tohu Goes up a Gear

10-Dec-2010

Recently we have seen Tohu, New Zealand's first Maori-owned wine company, go up a gear. Behind the move, Wakatu Incorporated consolidated its position by buying out fellow shareholders The Wi Pere Trust and Ngati Rarua Atiawa Trust. The highly regarded Mike Brown from Waimea Estate was installed as Chief Executive, and Bruce Taylor from Villa Maria took up a full-time winemaker role, continuing the excellent contracted work of Simon Waghorn who has his hands full with his Astrolabe and the Whitehaven labels. This is all very positive, but surely the growing maturity of the vineyards, particularly the Awatere, has contributed to the changes. Whatever the reasons, Tohu is a label well-worth watching. www.tohuwines.co.nz
