Tupari 2012 Sauvignon, Dry Riesling and Pinot Noir

29-Jul-2014
Tupari is the small winegrowing venture of David Turnbull and veteran Awatere Valley winemaker Glenn Thomas. The ‘Tupari’ Awatere vineyard was planted in 2002 on the site of an old orchard with vines planted to specific soil types, and produces only 2,500 cases annually covering Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. David’s family is fully immersed in the business, from tending the vineyard to the marketing. In December last year, I reviewed the new release 2013 Dry Riesling and Pinot Gris (click here to see my reviews). As with many producers, Tupari are exploring the ability to release the wines later to allow them to show the benefits of a little age. But to get to a position of retaining stock for a later release can be difficult to manage in terms of maintaining a continuous market presence, as well as cash flow! Here, I review the 2012 Tupari Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Riesling and Pinot Noir, a successful vintage for Tupari, the Pinot Noir being Glenn’s favourite of that harvest. www.tupari.co.nz
